Values and Vision

Why values and vision?

Values and Vision is one of the modules that form part of Paths of Excellence. Quite critically, it is the first in the series.

In order to make constructive and positive choices on any journey, we must know the destination we are seeking. That destination is our vision. The clearer the vision, the easier it will be to walk the path.

How do Values and Vision work together? The two work alongside each other on our journey. Our vision is informed by our values, which are deeply held views of what we believe to be worthwhile. Our values are reflected in our daily actions, and they influence the directions we take on the path towards reaching our vision.

Visions work best when they have an underlying sense of purpose. Having a vision means having a specific destination in mind, a picture of a desired future. The purpose is the reason and motivation behind the goal. The vision is the goal. For example, a purpose may be to “experience the world” (its people, places, cultures, food, architecture, etc). A vision of this purpose may be to visit Paris during the year.

What are the benefits?

Your values and the vision will determine the outcome and the experience on the path to your desired destination. When personal values and vision are aligned to the team and that of the organisation, positive results are achieved.

Having a compelling and powerful vision will keep you moving forward, even against discouraging odds. Vision is the most powerful motivator in an organisation. If the vision is vivid and has real meaning, people can do astounding things to bring it to realisation.

When articulating your values you are able to be clearer about what takes priority. By articulating your values in a team context, a clearer vision can be developed of how people will work together.
